Final K ‘n E Mock
In all likelihood, a few trades will take this mock and make it a mockery. But still, what would the NFL Draft be without some fun speculation.
We’re off to Vegas for the NFL Draft. Tune into our Twitter feed this week for plenty on interesting reaction (sober not guaranteed).
For anyone that missed it, I also did a podcast with Michael Felder from InTheBleachers.net explaining these picks and discussing much more on this year’s draft. To listen to that Podcast, click here.
Without further adieu, let’s mock. One last time…
1. St Louis – Sam Bradford (QB, Oklahoma): I could debate this pick at end and why I don’t agree with this decision, but the buzz is simply too strong to go against. Signing a QB with major shoulder and overall playing concerns to a 70 million plus deal just doesn’t make sense to me. With that said, Bradford is a Ram. Done.
2. Detroit – Ndamukong Suh (DT, Nebraska): This is the pick that SHOULD happen and I think will happen. Suh is the best player in the draft, and while Detroit would love to give their young QB some more protection, Suh is simply too talented to pass up. I do expect the Lions to make a move on a tackle early in round 2, or possibly even trade up to round 1.
3. Tampa Bay – Gerald McCoy (DT, Oklahoma): Chalk, chalk, chalk – but this pick makes sense. Tampa Bay needs a lot and d-line is the way to go if in doubt. McCoy is an absolute specimen and will be a good player at the very worst for the Bucs. Personally, I think an offensive playmaker via a trade down could be a possibility, but McCoy works here.
4. Washington – Russel Okung (OT, Oklahoma State): Forget the QB visits, rumors, and speculation – this team needs lineman and now has their guy. Shannahan has his QB and he needs immediate protection. Okung might not have the highest ceiling of anyone in the draft, but he can come in and play right now. If Detroit does take Okung, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them trade down.
5. Kansas City – Eric Berry (Safety, Tennessee): This is a Scott Piloi-type pick and I think the Chifs will nail it here. While many have been saying Bulaga is the guy, he simply doesn’t have the skills to warrant a top 5 selection. And while the safety position is typically undervalued, special safties aren’t nor should they be. Berry might be the best safety prospect in the last 7 years.
6. Seattle – Bryan Bulaga (OT, Iowa): This is a team that needs a ton and could go a lot of directions, but Bulaga is a safe player here. I think Seattle is counting on getting either Spiller or an edge rusher with their next pick, so they will likely pick up lineman now that they are expected to go quickly. It I were drafting, I would secure Spiller, but I am not.
7. Cleveland – Derrick Morgan (DE, Georgia Tech): I’m not as crazy about Morgan as others, but apparently some teams really are. I’m just not sure where else Cleveland will go unless the take a QB which they have adamantly said they wont. This is a much safer pick and Morgan should be a serviceable DE at the very worst. Lots of potential picks here.
8. Oakland – Trent Williams (OT, Oklahoma): Oakland might fall in love with speed here and draft Bruce Campbell, but I feel that Williams should and will be the pick. The Raiders need to get younger and better in the trenches and Williams should be able to come in and play pretty quickly. I could see them going d-line here also, perhaps Pierre-Paul or Morgan, but I believe this will come down to Williams or Campbell. And so the race for o-lineman stays in full swing.
9. Buffalo – Jimmy Clausen (QB, Notre Dame): Buffalo is in for a long season or two and needs to get their franchise QB. They thought they had it, but things haven’t worked out well over the course of the past 16 months. I like Clausen and think he can come in and be a very good NFL quarterback. Buffalo could go either offensive or defensive line here if they are enamored with someone still on the board.
10. Jacksonville – Joe Haden (CB, Florida): His struggles throughout the early part of this off season are well documented, but Haden picked up the pieces by running well and looking good at the Gators pro day. The Jags have some options here and I could see them going with Texas safety Earl Thomas, but a good corner is hard to come by. I feel like Haden could be a very good corner.
11. Denver – Dez Bryant (WR, Oklahoma State): This makes sense now, right? Well, they certainly have a gaping hole at WR and while I really like Eddie Royal, he isn’t a guy that changes defenses. Dez Bryant could be, and I believe he will be. They have some picks to work with but no wideouts in this draft can do the things Dez can. Defense is also a possibility (maybe Rolando McClain), but this makes sense after the trade and Dez’s late surge.
12. Miami – Dan Williams (DT, Tennessee):They’ve got their wideout and now they go defense. Williams’ name has been bounced around in all sorts of spots in this draft and he’ll likely go sooner than later. In a deep draft for DTs, Williams makes sense for the Dolphins and should help solidify their line in a hurry. I could see Pierre-Paul here as well, and think this could be a spot where plenty of teams want to be. Hint – trade.
13. San Francisco – Earl Thomas (Safety, Texas): Again, plenty of routes to take here but Mr. Thomas is a good way to go. San Fran has two picks over the course of the next five and will likely get two great players if they draft right. Thomas is underrated thanks in large part to Eric Berry and offers great value at pick 13.
14. Seattle – C.J. Spiller (RB, Clemson): If he falls this far, it’s the steal of the draft. Maybe even one of the better steals in draft history. This guy can come in and immediately change the Seahawks offense and special teams. This is why I believe they need to seriously consider not letting him slip by #6. If he’s here, it’s a done deal.
15. New York (Giants) – Rolando McClain (LB, Alabama): If he falls this far, it’s an absolute steal. The Giants would love to build their D around this guy and he is one of my favorite players in the entire draft. The Giants gave up a ton of points and a ton of yards and will likely load up on defensive players early on. This all starts with McClain and I have a feeling he’s their guy.
16. Tennessee - Jason Pierre-Paul (DE, USF): Everson Griffen was who I had pegged earlier in this spot, but Tennessee gets a gem with `Paul in this spot. This guy came onto the scene this fall and was an absolute beast. Tennessee needs a motor like this and gets their guy. With so many great players available, this is a spot where a trade could be had for a team looking to jump up.
17. San Francisco – Anthony Davis (OT, Rutgers): In my opinion, this would be another absolute steal. Davis tanked his stock this past offseason but this kid can flat out play. I actually feel he could end up being the best tackle taken in the draft once things have settled. His maturity and poor showing at the Combine are legitimate concerns but not for someone that can get their cornerstone left tackle at the 17th pick.
18. Pittsburgh – Maurkice Pouncey (C, Florida): An interior o-lineman is what everyone is saying and it’s hard to argue. Big Ben needs protection (badump bump), and this guy’s name has been hot since the season ended. CB Kyle Wilson is also a possibility as is Idaho guard Mike Iupati, but I think Pouncey’s buzz will carry him to this spot.
19. Atlanta – Brandon Graham (DE, Michigan): If there is one player that could surge into the top 12, maybe even the top 10, it’s this guy. Atlanta is hoping that he’s still around by the time they pick and I could even see them jump up even higher to grab him. Graham has really helped himself this offseason and people love what they see on tape. Love the motor and the pure pass rush he brings.
20. Houston – Kyle Wilson (CB, Boise State): With Dunta Robinson gone, Houston needs corners. Many have them pegged to draft a back here, but I think they might wait and grab someone later on. Instead I feel they give their already high power offense some help. Wilson is a very athletic DB and could be very good if he tightens his technique up a bit.
21. Cincinnati – Jermaine Gresham (TE, Oklahoma): The Bengals can approach this draft much differently than recent years and go into 2010 with very high hopes. It became very obvious at the end of last year, however, that they need pass catchers on offense. Because no WR jumps out this early on, I think the Bengals grab the best tight end in the draft. Although his workouts off the long layoff haven’t been jaw-dropping, this kid is an absolute baller.
22. New England – Jared Odrick (DE, Penn State): The ideal mold end for the 3-4 falls right into New England’s lap. The Patriots are a tough team to predict when it comes to the draft, but this pick makes sense on many levels. For one, it takes the Jets top choice away AND it helps the defense get younger in the front-7. I could see Jermaine Gresham in this spot if he falls, but I doubt that he does.
23. Green Bay – Sergio Kindle (DE, Texas): There’s a lot of chatter going around that Green Bay wants to move up and they certainly may. With that said, I think they would be beyond pleased if Kindle falls in their lap. They have some nice young players on D but Kindle would provide athleticism and versatility in the front seven. Plenty of options here and they might not even remain at 23, but Kindle makes sense.
24. Philadelphia – Devin McCourty (CB, Rutgers): Getting Ernie Sims was a huge boost to the D and I think they keep things rolling here. Sheldon Brown is gone which means they need a #2 corner. McCourty was a beast at Rutgers and should come in and impact special teams right away. He also ran very well at the Combine which was his lone question mark coming in.
25. Baltimore – Jerry Hughes (LB/DE, TCU): Although you haven’t heard this name here much, this is a guy to look out for. Hughes can do everything and Baltimore would love to add a defender that can literally play most positions in the front seven. I think Hughes provides plenty of value this late in the draft and the Ravens have a history of drafting good defenders. Trend continues.
26. Arizona – Bruce Campbell (OT, Maryland): Arizona lost a lot on defense but they also have holes on the offensive line. They could go in a variety of directions here but I feel that Campbell will seem awfully tempting after his amazing Combine workout. If one of the athletic DEs fall, expect the Cardinals to pounce. For this scenario, however, Campbell is the man.
27. Dallas – Mike Iupati (G, Idaho): The Senior Bowl standout might be the best interior o-lineman in the draft, although many would probably stand in Pouncey’s corner. With that said, Dallas gets a really nice player this late in round 1 and someone that could come in a start almost immediately. Taylor Mays or Nate Allen could be a possibility here as well if they decide to go safety.
28. San Diego – Ryan Matthews (RB, Fresno State): They need someone to run the ball other than Darren Sproles. While talented, Sproles simply cannot endure a full season as a full-time back. Matthews is a bigger back that also brings plenty of quickness. He’s really helped himself plenty this offseason and has been pegged for this spot for quite a while. Can’t argue with this pick at all.
29. New York Jets – Everson Griffen (DE, USC): The most active team this offseason has options late in round 1. I think they still have holes on their D-line even with Jason Taylor. Vernon Gholston obviously hasn’t worked out so it’s time to replace him. Griffen is an absolute specimen that could be something special if the skills translate. Taylor Mays also a possibility here.
30. Minnesota – Kareem Jackson (CB, Alabama): Injuries in the secondary that will go into the 2010 season force the Vikings to take a DB here. Not a bad thing with Jackson, and he’s earned plenty of the buzz that he’s gotten of late. Although he’s not the flashiest guy/name, people like what they’ve seen on tape and in his workouts.
31. Indianapolis – Brian Price (DT, UCLA): Another steal if he falls this far. Price could even go in the top-15 if one team turns out to really like him. Indy’s offense is set and while they could grab an o-lineman here, getting someone with the ability of Price at this spot would be outstanding. I could also see a trade here if someone wanted to jump back into round 1 and think Indy would certainly listen to offers.
32. New Orleans – Sean Witherspoon (LB, Missouri): This pick has made sense since day 1 and I’m not going to change it now. Witherspoon is a leader and gives the Saints some young speed on defense. If one of the athletic DEs fall to them, they might decide to go that route. Still, the Saints have to focus on D here and this guy fits the mold perfectly.
