Examining Memphis: Oh, How Bad It’s Gotten

By Adam Kramer   Sep. 10, 2011

The Memphis Tigers are the worst team in the country, and it’s not even close.

On Saturday, they came into their game against Arkansas State as more than a two-touchdown underdog and responded by losing 47 to 3. Arkansas State isn’t a slouch by any means, but they’re also obviously not a powerhouse.

Just how bad has it gotten for the Tigers? Well, really bad. REALLY, REALLY BAD.

We went back to 2009 and examined what they have been able (or not been able) to accomplish on the football field. Some of the numbers are staggering.

Here are some of the high (low?) lights.

-This season, Memphis has been outscored 106 to 17.

-In 2010, Memphis was outscored 330 to 173.

-In their game against Arkansas State, Memphis finished with 169 total yards, while Arkansas State finished with 611.

-In two games, Memphis has given up 1256 yards of total offense. That’s real.

-In two games, Memphis has only 6 drives of 30 yards or more.

-Memphis has not scored 20 points since September 11th, 2010.

-Memphis has scored 30 points once since the start of the 2009 season

-Since the start of the 2009 seas0n, Memphis is 3-23. Their three wins have come against Tennessee-Martin, UTEP and Middle Tennessee.
