Video: 5-Star Recruit Commits to Alabama, and his Mom Does Not Approve

By Adam Kramer   Jan. 05, 2012

Five-star defensive back Landon Collins committed to Alabama on Thursday night at the Under Armour All-American game. This is a huge get for the Tide, and picking up the Louisiana standout over their championship opponent is a huge story.

It wasn’t THE story, however.

When Landon made his decision his mother, well, was not pleased with the choice at all, and it’s clear that she wanted her son to attend LSU. Actually, she made that quite clear in front of the entire nation by offering up “Geaux Tigers” along with other words of non-encourgament.

If being embarrassed by your mom on national television isn’t bad enough, just imagine the horrendous list of never-ending chores that will greet him when he gets home.

i’d like to point out that geismar, la is much closer to baton rouge than new orleans. this player’s lack of geography skills is the most notable thing about this vid.

Im thinking he just wanted to get away from the obvious over control of his Mother.

great decision, not that I like Alabama but grow up and be your own man

Geismar, LA may be closer to Baton Rouge, but since he moved there are Hurricane Katrina, he clearly still considers New Orleans where he grew up. He made a good choice to get far enough away from his mother to be in control of his own life and his future. What a nasty mother she is, to do that to her own son on national tv.

I feel his mom should be happy for him, afterall it is his life and his decision. I think is mom needs to know when to where the proper clothing. When your son is doing a interview do not come dressed with your shoulders exposed!! I think this represents a poor image for her son.

He’s a wise young man to follow his heart. Unfortunately, his mom disgraced herself, her family, HER SON. What a shameful embarrassment….not right

    10. [...] Whatever Nick Saban said to five-star defensive back high school recruit Landon Collins, it worked. Collins was one of the most sought-after players in the country before Thursday night, we he announced his decision to enroll at Alabama after the Under Armour All-American game. The irony of the situation is that Collins is from Louisiana, meaning he has decided to betray his roots by not committing to LSU. At least Collins’ mother will always support him no matter what he does even if the people of Louisiana turn against him, right? Wrong. Check out this video that Kegs ‘N Eggs passed along: [...]

I am proud of him for making his own life decisions. You have to make your own way in life and I trully hope his mother will support him in his decision. Hope you have a great future Landon. Please remember though get your education for down the road when you no longer play football. Be smart and play hard!!!
      Supporting you Landon,

Congrats to Landon’s Mom on getting her son thus far and she SHOULD be PROUD and SUPPORTIVE. However, it’s HIS decision where he’ll continue HIS EDUCATION!!! The mother need to quickly and sincerely apologize to her son and the nation for her antic. Be proud of this youngman for reaching thus far, because a lot of the guys from his neighborhood are probably still back in the neighborhood. So Mr. Landon Collins, continue the love for your mother…..but pray on it and “DO YOU!”

Landon actuall lives with his father and stepmother, mom knew Landon was going to Bama and previously stated she would not attend,at the last minute it looks like she could not give up her 30 seconds in the spotlight, she needs to grow up and act like a responsible adult.

i know mom wanted him to stay close to home, but it is not her decision. She should be proud and happy that he is going to school period. That is a shame.

he decided to play for lil Nicky and the Gumps. Maybe he realised that he would have to sit at LSU and wait his turn behind superior talent. Plus his GF gets free tuition and a payroll check , like back in the Bear days. Maybe he can get a job on a shrimp boat with his assoc degree from Bama in Bayou Labatre.

I was so embarrassed for him. His mom should be thankful that her son has such great schools to choose from. Sometimes people (players and parents) get caught up in the “limelight” and don’t realize how blessed they are. There are many, many athletes that go unrecruited that are great talent. His mom should have been more appreciative of the opportunities her son has received. Momma looked crazy and disrespectful on national TV. It was like watching a little kid dig in their nose in public! She wanted the attention and couldn’t keep her emotions in check long enough to address her dismay behind closed doors. That’s probably why he chose to go so far away. How do you think ‘Bama fans are going to treat her IF she makes it to one of his games?!? Good luck young man and congratulations!

If I’m not mistaken the interviewer asked her a question and she answered honestly and what’s so dissgracfull about that. Plus she hot as hell. LOL

His friend and ex-team mate Eddie Lacy plays for the elephant boys, this is DEFINATELY one reason why he is going to that other school! It doesn’t matter as we will just beat him too!!!!! GEAUX FIGHTING TIGERS OF LSU…………

Good call out, Yeahboy! I’m with you there on that point 1,000%!

But on a more serious note, I definitely can appreciate the young man’s independence and desire to make his own decision and own way in the world, however, I also think that he should have given some consideration to his mom’s wishes out of respect to her and the influential role I’m sure she’s played in his life up to this point. And maybe he did hear her out and really thought about her desires before making the choice to go to commit to Alabama. I hope it all works out for the best for both of them. But hey, I can understand that she was disappointed and I DON’T think she showed any disrespect to her son. Mom, give me a call if you need some consolation! ;-)

For the record, it was revealed the next day that he doesn’t even live with his Mom, he lives with his stepmom. He also states on an ESPN phone interview the next day that his Mom was an Alabama fan 2 weeks ago he doesn’t know why she changed to LSU.
