Dr JZ Bowl Picks: Part II

Dr. JZ will be posting his bowl picks every day this next week so please continue to check the site for the daily releases.  If you have been wise enough to follow the good doctor’s 2010 bowl picks thus far you will be 3-0-1 and should have a solid bankroll built up for the grand finale of the NCAA football season.  The games are going to get tougher, so buckle your chin straps.  Here we go…

Independence Bowl:  3 Kegs Air Force (-3) vs. Georgia Tech

This is the battle of two triple option teams.  People continue to think Georgia Tech is the same team as a year ago, but they simply aren’t – especially with Joshua Nesbitt being injured most of the year.  Air Force lost four games this year including a trip to play Oklahoma, where the Falcons came up short by three points, which is not a bad loss.  Look for them to come ready to play and put the Yellow Jackets out of their 2010 misery.  Coming off a BCS bowl last season it is hard to imagine Paul Johnson getting his team ready for the Independence Bowl.  We shall see.  On a side note, do not get frustrated when Georgia Tech attempts to go for it every time on 4th down.  Johnson forgot to read the “How to be a smart coach” chapter in the Coaching for Dummies book.

Champs Sports Bowl: 1 Keg West Virginia (-3) vs. North Carolina State

This game is a matchup of two of my least favorite teams to handicap.  Dr. JZ is probably a combined 7-29 when betting on games involving either one of these teams.  However, since it is bowl season, this game is worth discussing.  Coach Stewart is fighting for his job, well, actually he’s basically relinquishing it sooner than later and the Mountaineers should come out fired up.  Russell Wilson is turnover happy at times and this West Virginia defense can create some tough matchups for opposing QBs.  Difficult game to make a big play on, so proceed with caution.

Insight Bowl: 3 Kegs Iowa (+3) vs. Missouri

Where do we start when discussing the 2010 season for the disappointing Hawkeyes.  With BCS title hopes coming into the season, they find themselves in the Insight Bowl in Arizona, the state where the 2010 collapse started.  If Kirk Ferentz’s squad has any pride, they will show up and beat the Tigers.  They have the talent to beat Missouri, even with all the suspensions and injuries.  Regardless of the outcome, this year was a failure for an Iowa team that has pro talent on both sides of the ball.  With a victory Tuesday night, they can still salvage some momentum for 2011.  Missouri is a tough team, but also a team known for their own shortcomings in big games.  This year they did beat Oklahoma, but then midnight hit and they followed their upset over the Sooners with two straight conference losses.  Iowa wins this game by at least a touchdown.

  • Dr JZ’s Thoughts and Week 11 Plays

6 days later, Dr. JZ is finally off tilt from two of the worst beats of the season, if not the past five seasons.

Bad Beat #1:  5 Keg play Colorado (-8 ½)at Kansas.  With Colorado up 45-17 with 11:05 left, Dr. JZ already started counting his money and figuring out what night games to play.  Twenty minutes later the dust cleared, Kansas won by 7 points, and Dan Hawkins’ tenure at Colorado officially came to end, partly due to the poor play of his son, QB Cody Hawkins.  Final score:  Kansas 52 Colorado 45.  Quick scene at the Hawkins‘  Thanksgiving dinner table.

Dan:  “Son, please pass the turkey.  Oh never mind, have your sister do it because you’ll probably throw an interception!!!”

Cody: “Dad, do you need an assistant coach next year at Northwest Montana State?”

Bad Beat #2: 5 Keg play Clemson (-3) vs. #23 NC State.  Final score Clemson 14 NC State 13.  You may be thinking, how is a one point victory a bad beat?  Here’s how: Clemson fumbled five times, losing two of them, threw an interception, had a touchdown called back on a holding penalty and missed two short field goals.  Unbelievable way to lose, but that is how gambling goes.  Some people have horse shoes up their ass and win games they shouldn’t.

Besides those two games, it was a solid week for Dr. JZ finishing 4-3.  It would have been 6-1 if not for those two crippling loses.  Stanford destroyed Arizona, exposing them for the frauds they are.  Oklahoma lost to the “12th man” at College Station.  And last and certainly least, Florida State lost another ACC game to UNC.  That makes 0 for 3 for Youngstown’s  finest trio of overrated brother coaches; not a bad day of work.

TCU( the loan 5 keg play that covered) is the best team in the country and Dr. JZ can only hope that they play Auburn or Oregon for the title, because TCU will catch a generous line and win outright.

Cam Newton and his father, Cecil Newton, have some $200,000 skeletons hanging in their closets.  Not bad.  Not bad at all.  Gotta respect the effort , but to think they would get away with it is ridiculous.  But they’re innocent until proven guilty, yeah and Mark Mangino doesn’t snort Big Macs for breakfast.

Texas kept the losing streak alive, but that will come to an end tomorrow against Oklahoma State (or at least their losing streak against the spread will end).   Michigan’s top tier defense was on display at the big house.  I hope the Ravens and Steelers took notes on how a real defense should perform.  Hahahaha.

And now, drum roll please………Week 11 picks to click.  Notice a trend, no road favorites.

    5 Kegs

    Georgia +8 at Auburn

Colorado +3 vs. Iowa State (no, I’m not kidding.  The Cyclones are that bad.)

    3 Kegs

    Oklahoma -14 vs. Texas Tech

    Notre Dame +6 vs. Utah

    Arizona -4 vs. USC

    Texas +7 vs. Oklahoma State

    South Florida +2 at Louisville

    Baylor +3 vs. Texas A&M

  • Dr. JZ’s Thoughts and Week 10 Plays

After a long week we are back and ready to dominate on what seems to be a generous card of games.  A quick review of the festivities from last Saturday.

-Dr. JZ went 7-3 and 2-1 with his 5 Keg plays.  Iowa and Nebraska came out ready to play and didn’t look back.  ESPN was touting Michigan State as a legitimate title contender….LOLLOLLOL, need we look back at their near loss to Notre Lame?

-Speaking of Notre Dame, can it get any worse?  NBC is better off signing a TV deal with the Kansas Jayhawks, or even worse, the Washington State Cougars.  It will get better because Brian Kelly does know how to win.  In two years they will be a top 15 team again and maybe they’ll even beat Navy.

-Two thumbs up for Oregon and Auburn for their solid victories on the road in conference.  Two thumbs down to Texas.  Teams better get their shots in now while Texas is down, because it does not take Mack Brown long to hit the reset button and reload into a title contender.

Enough with last week’s games, let’s look ahead to this Saturday in what looks to be another crazy day of college football.

-A few great matchups this weekend, with enormous BCS implications.  Game of the week is TCU at Utah, but Dr. JZ does not expect much of a struggle for the Horned Frogs as they continue to destroy the competition.

-Alabama at LSU, in what many people are saying will be a Crimson Tide blowout.  Interesting to note is the line is sticking at 6 ½ which means bettor beware.   However, the South Carolina line has steadily crept up to 4 ½ from the opening line of 3.  Look for the Gamecocks to stay atop the SEC East standings with a close but convincing win over the Razorbacks.

-Pac 10 game of the week as Arizona heads north to Stanford.  It seems like a big spread (9 ½), but Dr. JZ says lay the points as Andrew Luck’s stock continues to soar.  The “In The Tank” Pac 10 play of the week is Arizona State at USC.  USC’s season flat lined last Saturday night and they have nothing left to play for.  ESPN Gameday was in Southern Cal and that was USC’s Super Bowl.  Too bad for them, they hit a wall leading Oregon late.  Look for USC to lay down and die this weekend.  Arizona State has lost ten in a row to USC and they will pounce on this wounded Trojans squad and end the losing streak.  Dr. JZ says take Arizona State and make Lane Kiffin beat you.

-Oklahoma Sooner fans should be on edge this weekend as they head down to Texas to take on the Aggies.  Don’t fall asleep on this A&M team, they have an outside chance of winning the South division in a down year.  However, this weekend is a must win.  The line opened at 4 and is down to 3.  Dr. JZ says no thanks with this game, but gun to his head and he’s taking Texas A&M.

-The Big XII game of the week is between the powerhouse programs both looking for their first conference win: Colorado and Kansas.  Colorado is not playing as bad as their record would indicate and Dan Hawkins’ job is hanging by a thread.   Five years ago he thought he was upgrading when he left Boise State to take the Colorado job….the tables have turned.  Lay the 9 points in what should be a double digit win for the Buffalo.

-Now, for the ACC play of the week.  Clemson Clemson Clemson.  Yes, the same embarrassing squad that went on the road and lost to Boston College last week.  The Tigers have had success against NC State and the trend should continue on Saturday.  Kegsneggs host, Adam Kramer, will lose his hair if Russell Wilson beats him one more time.  Take the Tigers for Adam’s sake.

    Here are the plays…

    5 Kegs:

    Clemson (-3) vs. NC State

    TCU (-6) at Utah

    Colorado (-9) at Kansas

    3 Kegs

    Arizona State (+6) at USC

    Louisville (+6 ½) at Syracuse

South Carolona (-4 ½) vs. Arkansas

    Stanford (-9 ½) vs. Arizona

    Breeder’s Cup Classic Bonus Bet:

3 Horse Exacta Box:  Lookin at Lucky (6-1), Musket Man (20-1), and Quality Road (5-1)

    Best of luck!!
