Dr JZ Bowl Picks: Part II
Dr. JZ will be posting his bowl picks every day this next week so please continue to check the site for the daily releases. If you have been wise enough to follow the good doctor’s 2010 bowl picks thus far you will be 3-0-1 and should have a solid bankroll built up for the grand finale of the NCAA football season. The games are going to get tougher, so buckle your chin straps. Here we go…
Independence Bowl: 3 Kegs Air Force (-3) vs. Georgia Tech
This is the battle of two triple option teams. People continue to think Georgia Tech is the same team as a year ago, but they simply aren’t – especially with Joshua Nesbitt being injured most of the year. Air Force lost four games this year including a trip to play Oklahoma, where the Falcons came up short by three points, which is not a bad loss. Look for them to come ready to play and put the Yellow Jackets out of their 2010 misery. Coming off a BCS bowl last season it is hard to imagine Paul Johnson getting his team ready for the Independence Bowl. We shall see. On a side note, do not get frustrated when Georgia Tech attempts to go for it every time on 4th down. Johnson forgot to read the “How to be a smart coach” chapter in the Coaching for Dummies book.
Champs Sports Bowl: 1 Keg West Virginia (-3) vs. North Carolina State
This game is a matchup of two of my least favorite teams to handicap. Dr. JZ is probably a combined 7-29 when betting on games involving either one of these teams. However, since it is bowl season, this game is worth discussing. Coach Stewart is fighting for his job, well, actually he’s basically relinquishing it sooner than later and the Mountaineers should come out fired up. Russell Wilson is turnover happy at times and this West Virginia defense can create some tough matchups for opposing QBs. Difficult game to make a big play on, so proceed with caution.
Insight Bowl: 3 Kegs Iowa (+3) vs. Missouri
Where do we start when discussing the 2010 season for the disappointing Hawkeyes. With BCS title hopes coming into the season, they find themselves in the Insight Bowl in Arizona, the state where the 2010 collapse started. If Kirk Ferentz’s squad has any pride, they will show up and beat the Tigers. They have the talent to beat Missouri, even with all the suspensions and injuries. Regardless of the outcome, this year was a failure for an Iowa team that has pro talent on both sides of the ball. With a victory Tuesday night, they can still salvage some momentum for 2011. Missouri is a tough team, but also a team known for their own shortcomings in big games. This year they did beat Oklahoma, but then midnight hit and they followed their upset over the Sooners with two straight conference losses. Iowa wins this game by at least a touchdown.
