2010 NFL Mock Draft 1.0

We’ve got a long way to go, folks. The Combine, Pro Days, injuries, and Wonderlic gaffs will obviously alter many scout’s thoughts going forward. With that said, it’s never too early to play GM. Here it is, K ‘n E’s first (pre-Combine) mock draft. I love this &*$%.

1. St Louis – Ndamukong Suh (DT, Nebraska): Simply too good of player to pass on. There will be plenty of trade rumors leading up the draft, but rebuilding starts with your offensive and defensive line. Many will cry for QB, but taking a sure thing is so vital for the Rams. This guy is as close as it gets.

2. Detroit – Gerald McCoy (DT, Oklahoma): If they didn’t have a young, promising safety I think Eric Berry would be the pick. Instead they solidify their d-line with a fast interior player that has a very high ceiling. I think this certainly qualifies as a safe pick as well, and McCoy makes the Lions a better team immediately.

3. Tampa Bay – Eric Berry (S, Tennessee): This guy is as good as it gets, and even though Tampa has a lot of needs they might be getting the biggest difference maker when things work themselves out. They begin a long process by getting the best player on the board and generate some excitement in the secondary.

4. Washington – Jimmy Clausen (QB, Washington):Mike Shanahanwants/needs a QB, the question is which one? While Bradford is the name being bounced around, I simply think the risk will be too high. I am also impressed with a lot of things Clausen does after watching some initial tape. May change, but for now he’s the guy.

5. Kansas City – Anthony Davis (OT, Rutgers): Perhaps a surprise he’s this early, but not if you watched this kid play. The offensive tackles are being bounced around, (Okung, T. Williams, and Davis) but I think Davis will standout when the dust settles. Pioli will do things right and get his cornerstone tackle early.

6. Seattle – Sam Bradford (QB, Oklahoma): Seattle could go a lot of ways here but getting the future QB is priority one. Bradford has had time to heal and should check out – although his workouts will tell all. I think offensive playmaker (ala D. Bryant or C.J. Spiller) is also an option.

7. Cleveland – Joe Haden (CB, Florida): Mangini drafted CB Darelle Revis with the Jets and that turned out more than okay. Joe Haden isn’t close to the player Revis is, but he does have fantastic speed and is by far the best corner in this year’s draft. Cleveland has plenty of holes but defense is most important.

8. Oakland – Russell Okung (OT, Oklahoma State): Oakland has tried drafting QBs, wide outs, running backs, and well, almost everything. Here they go on the safe side and try and give whoever will be taking snaps some protection. They can get a quarterback later. For now, they go quasi-low profile with Okung (for once).

9. Buffalo – Trent Williams (OT, Oklahoma): If Clausen or Bradford fall, the Bills are likely to jump all over it. That is unless they pick up a QB before then. In any event, I believe they take an OT and make it 3 of 9 for O-lineman. I actually believe  Dez Bryant is also an option here if T.O. is truly gone.

10. Denver – Dez Bryant (WR, Oklahoma State): The consensus is that Marshall is most likely leaving. If this is the case, then they need someone other than Eddie Royal to catch passes. I love Bryant as a player and think Denver is getting something close to Marshall. Time will tell on this pick…

11. Jacksonville – Rolando McClain (LB, Alabama):This is a team that desperately needs a culture change, and a guy like McClain should do that almost immediately. Their secondary could also use a face lift, but I think they try and get what they (and I) believe will be a big-time impact player.

12. Miami – Derrick Morgan (DE/, GT) Joey Porter appears to be out and Jason Taylor isn’t getting any younger. This means Miami should look for that edge rusher/ outside backer to step in. I think others will actually push for this spot, but for now Morgan is the guy.

13. San Francisco – Earl Thomas (S, Texas): I love this guy and believe San Fran would jump at the bit (maybe even trade up) to get him. Imagine teaming him up with Patrick Willis and an underrated D-line? I think O-line is also an option but am confident that if Thomas is there, the 49ers will bite.

14. Seattle – C.J. Spiller (RB, Clemson):If you’ve followed K ‘n E then you know how much we love this kid. If he falls, and that’s a big ol’ if, then Seattle will jump right on it. They could come away with their future QB and playmaker in the same draft. Not too shabby at all and very possible.

15. New York (NFC) – Jason Pierre-Paul (DE, USF):The Giants need to find a pass rush, and while there might be other options here (Graham, Griffin, and others) Paul proved his worth this season, seemingly coming out of nowhere. I am a big fan of his, and it should be interesting to see if he stays above others.

16. Tennessee – Carlos Dunlap (DE, Florida): Interesting pick here. Dunlap has the ability to go in the top ten, maybe even the top five. I’d actually be surprised if he lasted this long once he puts on a show during workouts. With that said the Titans need to replace some big names on the D-line and Dunlap more than fits the bill.

17. San Francisco – Brian Price (DT, UCLA): With two of the top 17 picks, San Fran will look to add another piece to their defense. While their ends have played well, this team could definitely be stouter up the middle. They keep the fast-rising Price in Cali and solidify their D even further.

18. Pittsburgh – Bryan Bulaga (OT, Iowa): With as many hits as Big Ben takes, the Steelers need to protect him the best they can. While some of these are actually on the QB, upgrading with a massive tackle is a great start. Bulaga could play the left or right side and should be able to help out instantly.

19. Atlanta – Everson Griffen (DE, USC):While the secondary is surely an issue, getting more pressure on the quarterback is a close second. John Abraham needs help and unless something changes above he should get it in Griffen. A massive defensive end with a ton of upside, he should fit in nicely in the ATL.

20. Houston – Dan Williams (DT, Tennessee): They can score, so I think defense is the obvious choice here. The question, however, is where they go. The class is somewhat weak in terms of secondary and I think the Texans get the best player available at this spot. Lot of upside with this kid, they certainly recognize this.

21. Cincinnati – Arrelious Benn (WR, Illinois): The Bengals need receivers. This was painfully obvious in the last few weeks of the NFL season. While GT’s Demaryius Thomas is an option, I think Benn will prove to be the better player after workouts. His productivity wasn’t great at IL, but much of that was due to poor QB play and injuries.

22. New England – Jermaine Gresham (TE, Oklahoma): It’s tough to predict the Patriots, but their offensive weapons are getting older and their most consistent player just blew out his knee. With Watson most likely gone, the Patriots give Tom Brady a very valuable, young weapon to throw to.

23. Green Bay – Brandon Graham (DE, Michigan):Graham is an interesting prospect that Green Bay would love to add to the mix. Their offense is pretty set, but they’d love to get an explosive pass rusher to pair with Clay Matthews (thanks @Jom112)  now that Kampman seems to be out of the question. O-line also a very possible option.

24. Philadelphia – Taylor Mays (S, USC): Mays skills have been criticized of late, but this still is one of the best athletes in the draft. Mays would also fit right into the Eagle’s blitz scheme and might be the ideal choice to provide a thud in the secondary. They could also lean towards strengthening their line here, but for now it’s Mays.

25. Baltimore – Demaryius Thomas (WR, GT): Although they picked up Donte Stallworth, don’t expect the Ravens to stop. Derrick Mason had a very good year, but is up there in terms of age. Thomas is one of the hottest names right now and could soar even higher with his predicted stellar workouts.

26. Arizona – Bruce Campbell (OT, Maryland): Arizona is going through a big transition with the loss of Warner, and helping out their young and capable QB with protection is a great way to build. If they don’t go O-line, I could see the Cardinals lean towards upgrading the defensive line as free agency could weaken it greatly.

27. Dallas – Mike Iupati (G, Idaho): Here’s a name that has been thoroughly discussed since season’s end. Iupati has outstanding size, something the Cowboys have always craved on the O-line. While there are other lineman that could rival here after workouts and the combine, for now I’ll stick with Idaho’s own.

28. San Diego – Javhid Best (RB, Cal):Injuries are a concern for this playmaker, but his workouts will be too good for the Chargers to pass up. Jonathon Dwyer is the name being frequented here, but I feel that the Chargers will look for the true homerun threat. This guy, when healthy, is definitely that guy.

29. New York (AFC) – Devin McCourty (CB, Rutgers):The Jets stay in-state for this pick and get a corner to play on the other side of their superstar Revis. You have to assume Rex Ryan goes defense with his pedigree, and DE is also an option. If McCourty runs well, I believe the Jets will hop he falls.

30. Minnesota – Kyle Wilson (CB, Boise State): The injury to Cedric Griffin could very well impact the Vikings secondary next season. Because of this, I believe Minnesota takes the 2nd corner in as many picks. Wilson is a guy with a ton of athleticism and could fit very well in an already stout D.

31. Indianapolis – Jarid Odrick (DT, Penn State): This is another name that has received some serious attention of late, and Indy is a team that could use a strong presence up front. They have skill players at all offensive positions, and to me it’s a question of which line they’d like to upgrade.

32. New Orleans – Sean Witherspoon (OLB, Mizzou):A lot will depend on what the Saints do with their many free agents, but defense seems like the inevitable choice. Witherspoon is a leader and a tackling machine and could provide the Saints with some much need youth at LB. Navorro Bowman also possible.
