One of the strangest/worst college football offseasons has carried over into training camp. USC is going about business as usual in front of a much smaller crowd, and suddenly we have issues. (Again, Lane Kiffin Face Palm 1,215)
Typically fights in camp are no big deal. That is unless someone breaks their face.
USC cornerback T.J. Bryant and fullback Stanley Havili went at it, and it ended very poorly. The fight actually took place at a players-only workout on Friday when a relay drill turned sour.
Bryant is trying to play his way into the starting lineup and this certainly doesn’t help his cause. He’s expected to be out 3-4 weeks after surgery and the September 2nd opener is now in question.
“It’s very out of character. Sometimes, people show leadership in the wrong ways,” Kiffin said who certainly is in a FANTASTIC place to comment about leadership. “This was a situation where Stanley tried to step in to get guys to finish without the coaches being there. He was showing leadership to get guys to finish at a level he’s used to. My understanding is there was a back-and-forth and some pushing. Obviously, it didn’t end well.”
While USC is keeping a lot of the details under wraps, these kinds of things happen when it’s hot and people are competing against one another. The fact that it’s USC at this exact moment, however, will likely turn this into a much bigger story than it needs to be.
Surgeries and such are never a part of the plan, but the fighting happens on a collegiate and NFL level. Unfortunately for Lane Kiffin, his “worst offseason ever” has just taken another hit.
NOW PLAY BY THE RULES, GENTS.

It has been a ROUGH few months for everyone’s favorite West coast punching bag. And now, Lane Kiffin has suffered what could be his most embarrassing moment yet – although I absolutely hope not.
For those of you who don’t get your USC sanction news on an hourly basis, here’s what went down. Wait, no, never mind. Instead of explaining the entire Tennessee Titans vs. Lane Kiffin and co. lawsuit, let’s draw it up.
I’ve nearly exhausted everyone of my USC analogies, so I suppose a picture of the Titanic does the job.
Junior fullback D.J. Shoemate has jumped on the I’m-getting-the-^%$&-outta-here train (or boat if you want to keep up with the photo) and has decided to transfer to UCONN.
Shoemate, like those before him, attributed this move to something other than USC getting porked by the NCAA, saying he’d like to play running back vs fullback and that the position was simply too crowded. This kid is a fantastic all-around player, and he was expected to compete for the starting job and get a good chunk of carries this year.
In actuality, the NCAA rulings that juniors an seniors could transfer without having to sit out a season was a blessing for a guy in Shoemate’s position. I’m sure Lane Kiffin would just love hearing that.
Shoemate is the 3rd USC player to transfer this week, following in the footsteps of defensive end Malik Jackson who took off to Tennessee and Byron Moore who transferred to a junior college, and the fourth player overall.
With camps set to get going in a couple of weeks, it’ll be interesting to see if anyone else decides to make the jump.
My bet is yes.
