David Sills: Get Your Popcorn Ready

You know what’s more over the top than a recruiting war over a 14-year-old quarterback? An over-the-top recruiting video for a 14, then 13-year-old quarterback.

This is not a preview for a new Friday Night Lights spin-off, this is a Steve Clarkson/David Sills production.

Last year, Lane Kiffin made headlines when he promised young Deleware QB David Sills a scholarship only months after joining USC. Sills, who was in 7th grade at the time, committed verbally to USC and Lane Kiffin got his man (well, kid).

Sills trains with renowned quarterback coach Steve Clarkson, who also worked with Matt Leinart, and has become somewhat of a young celebrity on the west coast. As an 8th grader, David played varsity for the Red Lion Christian Academy and went 6-3 as the starter.

Today, reports surfaced that Auburn was getting into the Sills mix [insert your bad Cecil Newton joke here] and suddenly more and more people were learning of California’s young gunslinger. David’s father, also named David, shot down these reports and had this to say on his son’s commitment to USC.

“David was not offered by Auburn. We have a very good relationship with their coaches. They all know he wants to go to USC. It’s his dream school and he’s made it very clear he’s committed to USC.”

So there you have it. 2015 is right around the corner and USC will soon have their QB of the future once Matt Barkley is likely getting his first gray hair as an established quarterback in the NFL. Lane Kiffin will likely be coaching the Patriots by  after a quick stop at the Dallas Cowboys and a brief stint at the Department of Homeland Security.

Ah, the future.

  • Will USC play this song every time Sills is introduced. Epic.

One of the strangest/worst college football offseasons has carried over into training camp. USC is going about business as usual in front of a much smaller crowd, and suddenly we have issues. (Again, Lane Kiffin Face Palm 1,215)

Typically fights in camp are no big deal. That is unless someone breaks their face.

USC cornerback T.J. Bryant and fullback Stanley Havili went at it, and it ended very poorly. The fight actually took place at a players-only workout on Friday when a relay drill turned sour.

Bryant is trying to play his way into the starting lineup and this certainly doesn’t help his cause. He’s expected to be out 3-4 weeks after surgery and the September 2nd opener is now in question.

“It’s very out of character. Sometimes, people show leadership in the wrong ways,” Kiffin said who certainly is in a FANTASTIC place to comment about leadership. “This was a situation where Stanley tried to step in to get guys to finish without the coaches being there. He was showing leadership to get guys to finish at a level he’s used to. My understanding is there was a back-and-forth and some pushing. Obviously, it didn’t end well.”

While USC is keeping a lot of the details under wraps, these kinds of things happen when it’s hot and people are competing against one another. The fact that it’s USC at this exact moment, however, will likely turn this into a much bigger story than it needs to be.

Surgeries and such are never a part of the plan, but the fighting happens on a collegiate and NFL level. Unfortunately for Lane Kiffin, his “worst offseason ever” has just taken another hit.

NOW PLAY BY THE RULES, GENTS.

  • Picture Perfect: The Life of Lane

It has been a ROUGH few months for everyone’s favorite West coast punching bag. And now, Lane Kiffin has suffered what could be his most embarrassing moment yet – although I absolutely hope not.

For those of you who don’t get your USC sanction news on an hourly basis, here’s what went down. Wait, no, never mind. Instead of explaining the entire Tennessee Titans vs. Lane Kiffin and co. lawsuit, let’s draw it up.
